Our Story
Mapmakers Alaska has served the industry in Alaska for over 25 years. Starting out as “The Mapmakers,” we were first to produce colored maps in Alaska. These were enhanced versions of USGS Open File Reports. As the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act evolved, we published maps of the changing mosaic of Alaska’s land status even before the state and federal governments did so. When state lands were open to coal prospecting, we produced monthly maps of that activity.
Alaska’s pioneer oil man, Mr. Locke Jacobs, encouraged us to produce colored lease maps as well. Because of the high cost of offset printing, these maps were updated no more than once a year. Since then, we published oil and gas lease maps of most active areas in and offshore Alaska and have grown with advancing technology. Published maps include Arctic Slope, Foothills, Beaufort Sea, Cook Inlet, Gulf of Alaska, and the Bering and Chukchi Seas.
We make custom maps and presentation graphics for oil and gas companies, small and large investors in Alaska and worldwide, oil and gas analysts at Wall Street firms, Alaska Native Corporations, industry support companies, engineering firms, state and federal agencies, environmental impact statements and assessments, and court exhibits. During industry’s dark days in the late 1980s-early 1990s, we diversified our client base to provide cartographic services to municipalities, insurance firms, chambers of commerce, realtors, and non-profits. You will see our maps in a wide range of publications, among them the National Academy of Sciences publication “Cumulative Environmental Effects of Oil and Gas Activities on Alaska's North Slope “(2003).

We find great pleasure exploring, learning, sharing and mastering new technology alongside our customers. From paper maps to GIS - we consider each product “a work in progress,” to be changed and improved to meet our clients’ needs.
